Marble Falls cross country begins season

The Marble Falls High School cross country team is headed to College Station for the Mud, Sweat and Cheers Relay meet Saturday, Aug. 16.

It’s the program’s first meet of the season.

Athletes will compete in a four-person relay and run a 1.5-mile leg for a total of six miles.

“It’s a fun, non-traditional way to open the season and a great team-building experience,” head coach Brenda Gonzalez said.

The program is returning several key athletes including juniors Owen Martin, Connor Yaklin, Brazos White and Colton Rutland and sophomores Graham Goggans, Logan Hargraves, Santiago Gaytan, Landon Fletcher, Hudson Dehorty, Reese Massey, Savannah Hamblin, Hadalye Hernandez, Abbie Henderson and Katelynn Folts.

The teams also have several newcomers — freshmen Sapanna Khatri, Katerina Moseley, Graci Nelson, Fallon Gibson, Marlei Faz, JJ Walker, Jahir Garcia, Tanner Alford, Taylor Alford and Easton Carey and sophomores Sonoma Damuth and Fernanda Perez — whom Gonzalez believes will be solid contributors.

The runners have been practicing for several weeks. Their practices typically start around sunrise, and Gonzalez indicated the Mustangs and Lady Mustangs are eager to step to the starting line in an actual race.

“I want them to have fun, bond as teammates and show their competitive spirit,” she said. “This meet is about building connections and learning to battle for each other.”

In all, the coach seems just as eager to see her runners compete.

“We have a great group of kids who are putting in the work — planting the seed — and are ready to run the legacy as the season begins,” she said. “If you see them training around the community, give them a cheer. Exciting times are ahead for Mustang cross country.”
